South African Marketing Calendar 2026/27

Aiadverts 8 min read

Most seasonal adverts are late. It isn’t that businesses don’t know when Mother’s Day or Black Friday is. It’s that the work involved in getting an advert ready, a brief, a first draft, changes, sign-off and scheduling, takes longer than anyone budgets for, and the date arrives while it’s still in progress.

This calendar lists the moments that matter to South African advertisers between October 2026 and September 2027: public holidays, school terms, gifting days and the major cultural and religious festivals. For each one it shows when your adverts should go live and when to start, counted in working days so that weekends and public holidays don’t quietly eat your timeline.

Key takeaways

  • 20 moments between October 2026 and September 2027, each with a go-live date and a brief-by date counted from today.
  • Rule of thumb: go live a week before the date, and brief about 15 working days before that.
  • Dates verified against official and published sources. Term 1 of 2027 opens on 13 January, Black Friday is 27 November, and Diwali is Sunday 8 November.
  • Islamic festival dates are expected dates until the moon is sighted, so build in flexibility.
  • Cultural and religious festivals deserve accuracy and respect. A wrong greeting or a careless image costs more than a missed discount.

How to Read This Calendar

Not every date on the calendar is the same kind of moment, and the kind decides what your advert should do:

  • Public holidays change trading hours and create long weekends, which means opening-hours notices, getaway offers and “we’re open” adverts. South Africa’s rule is that when a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is also a public holiday, as the government’s public holiday list states. That’s why Human Rights Day 2027 is observed on Monday 22 March.
  • School terms shape family spending on supplies, activities and travel. Since 2024, all nine provinces follow the same gazetted school calendar.
  • Gifting days such as Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are won by whoever is in front of the buyer first.
  • Retail moments like Black Friday and Cyber Monday are driven by deals.
  • Cultural and religious festivals are not all public holidays, but many are major buying and giving seasons. Diwali, for example, isn’t a public holiday, yet it is one of the biggest celebrations in KwaZulu-Natal.

Find Your Next Campaign Moment

Filter by your type of business. The calendar counts from today’s date, hides moments that have passed, and shows when to brief and when to go live for each one. The first moment ahead of you is marked “Next up”.

Plan your next campaign Go-live is 7 days before each date, and briefing is 15 working days before go-live, skipping weekends and public holidays. Adjust for your own sign-off time. Dates marked as expected are confirmed by moon sighting.

The Moments That Matter Most

If you only have time for a handful of campaigns this year, these are where the money is:

  • Black Friday and the festive stretch (27 November to 25 December). The busiest sales period of the year, and the one where late adverts cost the most. Our Black Friday and festive season planner works backwards from your launch date.
  • Back to school (13 January 2027). Parents spend on supplies, uniforms, lessons and activities in the weeks around the gazetted opening of Term 1. See our guides for tutoring and training and baby and kids brands.
  • Gifting days (Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day). Short, intense and predictable. Jewellery, fragrance and grooming businesses all depend on them.
  • Festivals (Diwali, Ramadan and Eid, Easter). Not all are public holidays, but they drive food, fashion, gifting and family spending. Food and drink brands and fashion businesses in particular should plan for them.
  • Long weekends (Human Rights Day, Easter, Freedom Day, Women’s Day and Heritage Day). Perfect for getaways and events. Lodges and guesthouses and venues can fill dates well in advance.

Dates That Move

Some of the most important dates on the calendar aren’t fixed, and it pays to know why.

  • Diwali follows the Hindu lunar calendar. In 2026 the main day is Sunday 8 November, and the five-day festival runs from Friday 6 to Tuesday 10 November (Time and Date).
  • Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha follow the Islamic lunar calendar. Published projections put the start of Ramadan 2027 at about 8 February, Eid al-Fitr between 9 and 11 March and Eid al-Adha on about 16 or 17 May (The National). The actual day is confirmed after the new moon is sighted, which can shift things by a day.
  • Easter is calculated from the lunar cycle. In 2027, Easter Sunday is 28 March, with Good Friday on 26 March and Family Day on 29 March.

The practical lesson is to build flexibility into festival adverts. Avoid hard-coding a single day into the advert itself (“Eid is on Wednesday”) and prepare it so that the date line can change. Schedule the final posts only once the date is confirmed, and keep a version ready for either day.

Advertising Around Festivals Respectfully

Festival campaigns reward care, and punish carelessness. A few principles:

  • Ask people who celebrate. If you don’t celebrate Diwali or Eid yourself, have someone who does review your advert before it goes live.
  • Get the greeting right. “Happy Diwali”, “Eid Mubarak” and “Ramadan Kareem” are common, but check what your audience uses.
  • Don’t assume. Customers may have specific food, dress and observance requirements. Offer choices rather than guessing.
  • Treat sacred symbols and figures with care. Don’t use religious imagery casually to sell unrelated products.
  • Prefer product-led adverts. If you use AI imagery, keep it focused on your product and the occasion, rather than depicting people at religious observances, and never present an AI image as a real event.

South African adverts must also be truthful under the Advertising Regulatory Board’s Code, whatever the occasion. Our complete guide to AI advertising covers the rules.

How Far Ahead Should You Plan?

The calendar uses a simple rule: go live seven days before the date, and brief about 15 working days before that. The reason is the work in between:

  1. Brief. You send product photos, your offer and the dates. Our guide on how to brief an AI advert explains what to include.
  2. First draft. About five business days.
  3. Changes and sign-off. A few days, longer if a head office or retailer has to approve.
  4. Scheduling and platform review. Adverts need to be loaded and approved, with a buffer for surprises.

At Aiadverts, most adverts are delivered within 3 to 5 business days of a brief, so the rule above is deliberately generous. If your sign-off process is quick, you can start later. If it involves several people, start earlier.
