Black Friday and Festive Season Adverts: When South African Businesses Should Start
Every year, the same thing happens in the second week of November. Businesses across South Africa look at the calendar, realise Black Friday is days away, and scramble for something to advertise with. The adverts that come out of that scramble tend to look rushed, go live late, and compete against everyone else who left it late too.
Black Friday falls on Friday 27 November this year, and the festive season follows straight after it. The businesses that do best across this stretch aren’t necessarily the ones with the biggest discounts. They’re the ones whose adverts were ready before the rush started.
Why Starting Late Costs More
Leaving festive adverts until November creates three problems at once:
- Advertising gets more expensive. More businesses compete for the same audiences in the run-up to Black Friday, and ad costs tend to rise with that competition. The earlier your adverts are live, the more of your budget goes to reaching people rather than outbidding other advertisers.
- Creative gets rushed. An advert produced in two days to meet a deadline rarely matches one that had time for a proper brief and a round of revisions.
- There’s no room for surprises. Platform ad reviews, a pricing change from a supplier, a product that sells out early: every one of these needs a few days of buffer that a late start doesn’t have.
The South African Festive Calendar
The season is longer and more layered here than the Black Friday headline suggests:
- Month-end payday. For many South Africans, pay lands around the 25th, which means Black Friday arrives with fresh spending power and December opens with a second wave.
- Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Friday 27 and Monday 30 November, with deals increasingly starting a week or more earlier. For every other date worth planning around, see our South African marketing calendar for 2026/27.
- Day of Reconciliation. Wednesday 16 December is a public holiday, and for many families it marks the start of the long break.
- School holidays and travel. December is peak season for travel, eating out, gifting and entertaining.
- Christmas and New Year. Then the long, quiet stretch that many South Africans only half-jokingly call “Janu-worry”, when budgets are tight and value messaging matters most.
Plan Your Campaign
Choose a campaign, or enter the date your own adverts need to go live. The planner works backwards from that date, skipping weekends and South African public holidays, and tells you how much time you have from today. If you want to test two versions first, see our guide to A/B testing adverts on a small budget.
What a Festive Campaign Actually Needs
One advert isn’t a campaign. The businesses that get the most out of the season run a short sequence, each piece doing a different job:
- A teaser, a week or so before the sale, so your audience knows something is coming and saves the date
- The main offer advert, clear enough that someone understands the deal in the first two seconds
- A last-chance advert for the final day or two, which is often where the most sales happen
- Versions for every channel, including WhatsApp Status, where your existing customers are already watching
- A thank-you or “still available” follow-up, so the momentum doesn’t stop the moment the sale ends
Our guide on how to brief an AI advert covers what to send us for each of these, and a single advert package starts from R3,000. See what AI video ads cost for the monthly options that cover a full sequence.
Three Festive Advert Mistakes to Avoid
Burying the offer. If a viewer can’t tell what the deal is within a couple of seconds, they’ve scrolled past. Lead with the offer, not the logo.
Advertising everything at once. A festive advert with twelve products says nothing about any of them. Pick your strongest two or three and let the rest sit on your website or online store.
Running the same creative for five weeks. Audiences see your adverts repeatedly over the season. Fresh versions every week or two keep performance up, which is exactly where consistent social media management pays off.
Getting Started
If you’re a retailer, a restaurant, a bakery, a hair salon or barber, an online store or any business planning a Black Friday or festive push, the most useful thing you can do is pick your launch date now and work backwards from it.
Book your festive campaign and send us your products and offer. We’ll build a free demo advert first, so you can see the quality before the season starts.
